① Sergey Belov. A Leader Without Fear and Reproach (article), pp. 5-7

② Vytautas емemaitis. Modestas Paulauskas (documentary, translation by A. Mayborody-Martinkaite ), pp. 29-117

③ Anatoly Pinchuk. The Zalgiris, with and without Paulauskas (article), pp. 118-127

1. A Leader Without Fear and Reproach

Attempts to single out “the most-most” in sports or call “the most-”itself ”inevitably carry a touch of subjectivity. Yet experts of basketball will probably agree with me if I call Modestas Paulauskasa one of the most outstanding players in history basketball. Not only ours, but also worldwide.

Paulauskas' talent shone before I showed up big basketball, and it was Modestas who became for me an example for imitation. And when we started playing together, I always wanted to at least to help him in something. He himself had always thought that there was no he doesn't need help on the site, and he didn't expect it from anyone. But, Oh, how hard it had been for him!

In the national team he took the place of such an unquestionably outstanding a striker like Yuri Korneev. And since it happened immediately after the Tokyo Olympics, where Korneev proved himself in everything it required a lot of things. Also in the main team but he soon accepted the captain's armband from another outstanding all-time basketball player-Gennady Volnov. No wonder from Paulauskas all expected what is called self affirmation.

And he asserted himself, and how! Even to the detriment of his undeniably vibrant personality. Hiding her away, did everything for teams. Modestas was a sniper, as they say, the grace of God. With his excellent throw, he would fire at the opponent’s ring from medium and long distances, and not get involved in battles under ring. Every time he found himself on the hottest points of the site, sought only to shield, led a titanic struggle for bounces.

The captain knew: there will be snipers in the team, but to climb into hell not every one wants to. And he climbed and therefore entered the team immediately, without all advances to the future.

Modestas outwardly gave the impression of a sort of beeches. In fact , he was an extremely sociable person. In the national team come together people are very different, including different age, it happens that there are those who are already 36, with those who are barely turned 18. It is clear that the interests and tastes of such different people are very different. In addition, the athletes do not have so much left time to communicate with each other outside the training hall.

However, Paulauskas was quick to get along with people. Unsurprisingly, that when he finished playing big-time basketball, he was exactly children's coach. Only people with an open soul can remain in this position - children are very sensitive to any falsehood, love people open.

I quickly became friends with Modestas. Each of us then I took a lot from another. We didn’t just get along with each other (and in big sports it is often considered that this is already good), but mutually enriched each other. With Modya, as we all called Paulauskas, and there could be no question of any division of glory, prestige. I not to mention the points earned in the game.

Although both of us were classified as snipers, there was no rivalry with a man like Moda, It was out of the question. But after the match he could have spoken out strongly about the mistakes of any of us. But this it didn't sound like a grumble. If you like, that was it the very thing that should be called business criticism. Well, It’s quite logical - people of principle are chosen as captains. I told you Modestas was always manly and direct, so they didn't hold a grudge against him.

Every basketball player inevitably faces the question of choice playing role. It is very important that this the right choice. In this regard I can't help thinking that Paulauskas could have lived much longer in the big basketball than he did.

Modestas started in basketball as a defender. He would have stay that way. But not allowed his truly rare universalism, the desire to do everything on the site. He could do everything, our Moda. It is not surprising, therefore, that when the USSR national team left striker Yuri Korneev, the coaches invited Paula to this place.

So the rookie had to do everything he did experienced predecessor: pick up balls under his shield, fight for rebounds under someone else's. Not only that, he was willing to take on the role of leader attacks. And all this he did with no less brilliance than his predecessor.

No, Paulauskas did not disappoint, he changed his role. But almost at that at the same time, giants began to come to basketball two meters tall. Be you even seven spans in the forehead, and fight with such rivals, if your height is 194 centimeters, it is difficult.

Of course, the choice of playing role did not depend on one Paulauskas. But the thing was, he clearly agreed with the decision the coaches put him on offense, and the agreement prompted him to do so his nature as a fighter.

He left the court, only giving all of himself to basketball, without residue's. This player burned to the ground in every match. Even a fugitive one look at him was enough to know that something special was happening. nature did not endow him the data for basketball. He's good at it he knew, and so in training he condemned himself to exhausting work.

He worked in the training room to the point of oblivion, and he alone knows what that apparent ease in the game was worth, the ease with which he took away balls from opponents above the shield his height. Behind all this was hard work: many hours with rope, on shells, with shells, hundreds, thousands of jumps.

In his club, Zalgiris Kaunas, he was a mainstay teams. If such teams as, say, CSKA, had in their composition several equally high-class players, which means who-one of them could afford a respite, giving up the role of leader another, Paulauskas in "Zalgiris" did not dare to dream of such a thing opportunities. It just wasn't there. And "Zalgiris" 60s-early 70s they were rightly called the "Paulauskas team".

He took all these qualities, the manner of the game, and with them the leadership role without fear and reproach, and with him to the country's main team - he simply could not play any other way.

Alexander Belov, Olympic champion: "I Studied and am learning two basketball players — Sergey Belov and Modestas Paulauskas. I was thirteen years old when, after the end of the match between the national teams of Lithuania and Estonia in Leningrad, I went up to Paulauskas and asked for his autograph. He he smiled as he signed. I still keep my autograph. Later we started playing against each other in our teams, and then together in the national team. This is truly "iron" man: fighting always to the end, even with clenched teeth. Modestas is loved coaches, especially A. Gomelsky, V. Kondrashin, S. Bashkin. Gomel, believing most of all in Modestus and Sergey Belova, sometimes kept them on the site for forty minutes. In Puerto-Rico Modestas performed well, perhaps not so well effective, but very useful for the team.

He is intolerant of mistakes, slackness. At the match USSR national teams - Mexico one debutant from our team made a mistake, simply blundered. Modestas said all Few words. But these words, the look reminded me and mine mistake at a crucial meeting with the Americans on Munich Olympics in 1972. I do not know another such basketball player, like Modestas, and I can not imagine who could replace him. "

Sergey Belov, Olympic champion: "about complex personalities, whether they are actors, scientists, or athletes, it is always difficult to speak. And with Modestas I have all the memories of victories and defeats. I have met many more capable basketball players in my life, and I have always admired their play, their savvy on the court. But with that was also the sadness: why is it so easy for them to give what it takes a lot of effort for me. Strange thing, good luck Modestas I never felt bitter, perhaps because I saw him work in training, knew the value of his success, and realized early on that he never tries to surprise and outshine others on the court. And not just on the court. We became best friends. During my time in the national team, we often lived in the same room. I firmly believe that Modestas was and remains a major figure in the Soviet basketball. His authority was astounding: neither the judge nor famous basketball players did not allow themselves not to notice him. Modestas should have been the first everywhere, and that is why he did not make any concessions, first of all to himself, and then to others. Having already decided to leave the big sport, he returned to the team at the request of the coaches, so that to become her captain again, a leader without whom our team in Puerto Rico would really be difficult. His performance in this championship once again proved that > about equal he doesn't. He led the team all the way to victory. It is difficult to withstand such nervous tension. And what a blow he suffered at the 1970 world Cup! He played well, but it so happened that at the most crucial moment in the match with the USA basketball players, four of his free throws failed one by one! Each of us had to experience this in life. Maybe Modestas, very worried about the future of our team, could not come to terms with the idea that someone else would be leading the attack.

I doubt very much if anything would have come out of me if I hadn't I met Modestas. I believe that of all the athletes in the world the closest thing to the standard of a modern basketball player is Modestas."

Together with Sergey Belov we dreamed together to be the best in national team. Well, we had to work hard, sweat. I remember how once, before the European championship sixty-seventh year in Finland, experienced very unpleasant moments. Gomelsky warned at a team meeting that for a match in Italy, held before the championship, will not go one of world champions. He began to read the list of the team, and I squeezed all inwardly: could the national team act without me? It turned out that Sergei Belov would not go to Italy. And suddenly I felt that it upset me even more. After all, we are Sergei were more than teammates. True to my joy and fortunately Sergey, upon returning from Italy Gomelsky again took him to the team. And since then Sergey Belov no longer allowed anyone to doubt his opportunities. This was the beginning of his rise.

When the world championship in Ljubljana ended, Sergey was recognized as the best player of the tournament. In 1975, he was included in the top ten athletes of the country. It's really a wonderful athlete and a wonderful person - sincere, possessing an analytical mind, always and in everything elegant".
